Water Park Hires More Staff To Handle Large Crowds

Wet N Wild Waterworld saw record attendance this Memorial Day weekend compared to previous years, but security measures ensured everyone a safe time.

"Normally we'll have one EMT on staff. On weekends it'll go to maybe two. On weekends like this we'll have three. Same thing with the lifeguards. We'll have regular staffing, and then on the deep water pools we'll add two or three spots to each pool just be sure," said Chandra Edwards-Cottingham, General Manager for Wet N Wild Waterworld

On Saturday, the park had more than 8,000 visitors. Sunday the numbers dropped to about 5,000. The weekend festivities included live performances and hot air balloon showcases.

Law enforcement was visible throughout the park. Several officers with the Socorro Independent School District, Anthony police and the sheriff's office were on hand to handle any situation.

Life Ambulance didn't stage at the park, but had more personnel working this weekend than usual.

Meanwhile, thousands who came to picnic at the park packed their coolers with their drinks of choice.

"Especially that we have young children, we have a big cooler of water, a lot of Capri Sun juice, and a lot of sunscreen because it's 90, 100 degrees out here," said Carolina Oblick from Northeast El Paso.

Staying hydrated is especially important to the Oblicks' nine-year-old daughter, who's suffered several heat strokes in the past.

The park's emergency personnel treated about 10 people for heat exhaustion on Sunday. As the temperatures climb to the mid-90s, not everyone is sticking to water and juice.

"I'll have one of these (beers) now, one in the afternoon, and that will probably be about it," said Mark Williams from East El Paso.

"We brought a bunch of water bottles and Coke cans to drink after the beer runs out," said Susie Duran from East El Paso.
