Warrant Round-Up Lands Dozens Behind Bars

EL PASO —

El Paso sheriff deputies started knocking on doors all around El Paso at 3 a.m. Saturday searching for 347 people with outstanding warrants.

"We didn't tell anyone about these operations, so I think many of them are trying to avoid being home, especially if they know they're wanted," said Deputy Jesus Tovar of the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.

The amnesty period, which gave everyone a week to pay all fines, ended Friday, and authorities wasted no time tracking down those who still owed.

In total, "Operation Lasso" successfully executed 154 warrants, 44 of which were traffic-related.

"We do have to clear the dockets. we do advise the people two weeks prior in newspapers and TV it's on the radio we do advise people to go ahead and pay their warrants," said Deputy Eduardo Placencia.

Deputies said some of the suspects have outstanding warrants for aggravated sexual assault on a child, but are not registered sex offenders because they have never been convicted.

"There are sex offenders living on our streets that are not registered, and we need to apprehend these individuals," Tovar said.

And for the hundreds who escaped the arm of justice? The search isn't over. Deputies said they will be out again soon.
