Want A Pet? Adopt A Tortoise!

August 29, 2006 —

When you think of a pet, chances are you think of a cat or dog.

But what about a tortoise?

One Las Cruces man says tortoises make wonderful pets, and he said they even like food with a local flavor.

Many think you have to go to a zoo to meet African spurred tortoises like Jumbo, Bala and Rafiki, but you don't.

"These guys ... are the third largest land tortoises in the world. I have had the big male for about 16 years and the others are about 12, 14 years old," said Russell Ward, tortoise owner.

Ward said although they're not the typical pet, they make great companions - especially for those who like exotic animals.

"When I come outside, whether in the backyard or in their enclosure, they come out and want to see what I am doing most of the time. They are checking to see if I have food in my hands and they will let you sit there and scratch their heads," he said.

Recently, one of Russell's female tortoises laid eggs - now there are about 50 little ones running around. Though cute, for those considering one as a pet, it's important to note they could be around for some time.

"It's is a lifelong commitment," Ward said. "One of these guys they can live up to 100 years old."

Ward said, on average, tortoises will weigh more than 100 pounds but are not high-maintenance.

Tortoises are strictly vegetarian - old produce will do - and they even enjoy their favorite meal of green chili.

Ward has about 40 baby tortoises left for adoption, but in the next month or so he could have about 50 more.

He does screen applicants to ensure they understand the commitment needed for the animals, and said a large enclosed backyard makes a good home.
