EL PASO,Texas —
Wednesday, they announced from now until the end of September drivers who purchase gas at Walmart will save 10 cents a gallon across 18 states including Texas.
Gas prices have been on a steady climb throughout the spring, according to AAA, and were expected to reach $4 a gallon.
The world's largest retailer said this is meant to help their core shoppers, many of whom have been hit hard by gas prices.
Local drivers KFOX14 spoke with certainly like the idea.
Roy Ramirez said, "I think that’s a good thing that they're doing that and I applaud anybody for lowering the gas because they don't have to lower the gas, they can leave the gas prices up."
Although gas prices have dropped in recent weeks and the national average is now at $3.54 per gallon, drivers are still feeling the pain.
Henry Dominguez told KFOX14, "I go to school far eastside so it's really hectic I do like 100 miles a day so gas really hurts me bad."
“We've been gouged for a long, long time as far as the prices go and we need to try and get the prices back down," Ramirez said.
Walmart’s plan will lower prices by 10 cents a gallon but you have to pay with one of their cards.
Ramirez told KFOX14, "For 10 cents it would depend how long the line was you know because when you get in there with the heat as hot as it is and even with the air conditioner it can be frustrating."
Customers have three options; a money card, credit card or gift card.
A Walmart money card costs $3 to buy, $3 to reload and $3 a month to maintain.Plus, you have to provide personal information including your Social Security number.
Consumers can apply for a Walmart credit card but that carries a 23% annual percentage rate.
There is also the option of a re-loadable gift card which doesn't come with any catches other than the fact that customers have to go inside the store to buy it.
That isn't a bad thing for Walmart loyalists.
"I shop at Walmart all the time so I could just probably buy a card while I’m buying groceries so it wouldn't be that bad," said Dominguez.
