EL PASO, Texas —

El Paso police said they were called to an early morning crash in the 5000 block of Mesa Street on Saturday that left one Fort Bliss soldier dead.

Police said they found Juan Collado, 21, dead at the scene. The investigation revealed Collado was driving a 2007 Suzuki GSXR southbound on Mesa Street traveling at a high rate of speed, police said.

According to Special Traffic investigators, Collado failed to negotiate a curve and drove over the curb and then hit several steel fence posts and a traffic sign.

Collado died at the scene and the motorcycle came to rest in a dirt area off the roadway, police said.

The man was wearing a helmet at the time, but officials said it is unknown if alcohol was involved.

This is the 14th traffic fatality this year, compared with nine this time last year.
