Vandals Target Northeast Home; Victim Fears It Will Escalate

EL PASO, Texas —

A woman said she's been the target of vandalism in her neighborhood and claimed police aren't doing anything about it.

On Friday, Laura Mier told KFOX that vandals have damaged her home and vehicle. She said she wonders if someone in her family has to get hurt before police react.

"They vandalized my car. They threw another bottle at my car and broke it twice," said Mier.

Mier said her home has been vandalized six times in three weeks. Bottles were thrown at her car, her dad's car and even their living room window, barely missing her 3-year-old daughter.

"It really scares me. Since it's been six times I feel like it's going to escalate to something else," said Mier.

Mier said police haven't done much. The incidents started happening in the beginning of January and just now they've assigned a detective to the case.

"What is it going to take for them to actually listen to me, to actually do something about it, for someone to get hurt in my family?" said Mier.

El Paso police spokesman Detective Mike Baranyay said because Mier put in the call after the damage was done, it's not an "in progress call" and it becomes a lesser priority. He also said what delayed the assignment of the detective is Mier wasn't calling the right number.

"This is a situation where had she had called the regional command she would have a detective assignment within two days of making the report, but what she was doing was calling the regular non-emergency number," said Baranyay.

Mier said just because no one has been injured during these incidents, she feels her family is in danger.

"I want this to stop. I want to live my normal life like I was before," said Mier.

Mier also mentioned that the vandals may be part of a gang. But at this point, police said it hasn't been established as a gang-related incident.
