Vacant Home Goes Up In Flames

EL PASO, Texas —

Firefighters were dispatched to a large house fire in the 5800 block of Batiste Court in El Paso's Upper Valley overnight.

Flames were spotted coming from the area just after 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. A total of 11 units were originally called to the scene but the response was downgraded after crews learned that the home was vacant.

Within minutes of arriving, firefighters reported seeing electric lines in the area on fire and immediately called El Paso Electric Co. to the scene.

Battalion Chief Samuel Rodriguez said one of the melted wires came down just a few feet from hitting a firefighter.

"It did short and creat a large spark when it hit the ground, but luckily he wasn't there," said Rodriguez.

A neighbor spotted the blaze and did what he could to battle the fire by dragging a water hose to the area.

The cause of the fire was still being investigated early Wednesday morning, but a preliminary report shows that it is electrical in nature.

No one was living in the home at the time of the fire and no firefighters were injured during the incident.
