Utility Close To Building New Power Plant

SANTE FE, N.M. —

El Paso Electric is close to constructing a new power plant near Sunland Park. The Alamogordo Daily News reports the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission Tuesday advanced the proposal for constructing the nearly $84 million proposal to a final vote. Already the New Mexico Environment Department and the Texas Public Utility Commission have authorized the project.

El Paso Electric officials say the natural gas-fueled plant will serve 45,000 to 50,000 electricity customers in El Paso and the Las Cruces area. The utility also services Holloman Air Force Base.

Construction would take about two years.
