"We are five female students making this trek all the way to Rwanda to study women’s studies. It is very important," said undergraduate student Lorena Ramos.

"Women are having the same struggles over there that we have here. There are women trying to get through school with five kids. There are families struggling to live with ten people under the same roof. I'm hoping to gain that global experience to see how we really are all the same," said Ramos.

Tanya Flores is a graduate student planning a career in international communications. She said her goal in making this trans-global journey is very specific.

"I want to come back and use those experiences and tell people "this is what I have learned. This is where I've gone," said Flores.

For Ashley Thompson this journey is going to be a learning experience, not just about the lives of others, but about her own life, too.

"I think it is going to give me that opportunity to see everything that I have, and that we have here in the states that they don't," said Thompson.

All three young women admit there was some apprehension from their families when they each announced their destination of Rwanda, a nation that has experienced genocide in the past, and is still struggling under the weight of rampant poverty.

Ultimately, all say their families came around and realized the passion each has for this experience.
