Proposed road extension around Sun Bowl

EL PASO, Texas —

More road work and roundabouts are in the works for El Paso, but this time it's around the UTEP campus.

The University of Texas at El Paso has teamed up with the Texas Department of Transportation to help make more room for students and visitors.

"We're growing and because we're moving toward becoming a closed campus, that's going to push the traffic back out on these roads. They're busy and in the fall it's not uncommon to see the cars stacked up at Glory Road and Sun Bowl Drive," said Greg McNicol, UTEP's associate vice president of business affairs.

A solution was created and it's one that's part of UTEP's campus master plan.

This spring, TxDOT will come in and add two lanes on the stretch of Sun Bowl Drive that only has one lane in both directions for eastbound and westbound traffic.

"The design is a 10-foot lane in the middle, a 14-foot lane on the outside which then is what they call a shared lane for bicyclists. And so, that too is working with the campus master plan in future housing that will be up and down on Sun Bowl," said McNicol.

Crews will also add sidewalks but there will be more than extra lanes added to the road -- there are also plans for another roundabout.

"The intersection at Sun Bowl and Glory Road is going to be another roundabout and so that is a little more complicated to get that constructed. TxDOT recognizes the need that we have so the downtime will be limited," said McNicol.

The Sun Bowl widening project will cost $4.5 million, and the bill is being split between UTEP, TxDOT and state funding.

The project could take 10 months to a year to complete.

TxDOT will host a community meeting to gather input from the public Dec. 4 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the El Paso Natural Gas Conference Center at the University of Texas at El Paso.
