UTEP Construction Helps With Effort To Reach Tier 1 Status

By Monica Balderrama

EL PASO, Texas —

The University of Texas at El Paso has $153 million worth of construction work going on at the campus. While it may be exciting to some, students often disagree.

"I think it's horrible. It's an inconvenience to go to class," said Adrian Herrera, a sophomore at UTEP.

Several construction projects are going on across campus. The Swimming and Fitness Center expansion is due to open this spring semester. Two new buildings are nearing completion -- the Colleges of Health Sciences and Nursing will be ready for the first summer session and the Chemistry and Computer Science will be ready for classes November 2011. The old nursing building will still be operational. Some programs, mostly graduate programs will remain.

"I think it's cool. There's a lot of things expanding, and there's better classrooms," said freshman Raul Garcia.

One project that's been highly anticipated is the pedestrian bridge that will link the new College of Health Science/School of Nursing Building and the S-3 parking lot at the corner of University Avenue and Schuster Avenue.

"A lot of people jaywalk, so it's pretty dangerous," said Herrera.

The construction may be a nuisance for students, but ultimately it will benefit the University.

"Part of the construction is just meeting our demand with our growing population of students and our movement toward a Tier 1 research status. These are some of the buildings going in support of that cause," said Greg McNico, associate vice president of business affairs.
