EL PASO, Texas —

AAA Texas has some suggestions the next time you hit the road to help maximize the amount of gas in your tank.

First, keep your tires properly inflated, and get the engine filters changed regularly. Good maintenance goes a long way. Also, try to coast your way into making a stop, instead of abruptly hitting the brakes.

"To get that car moving from a dead stop to where it's starting requires an enormous amount of gasoline," AAA spokesman Dan Ronan said.

Another piece of advice? Use cruise control.

"Your speed is consistent, the engine is using the same amount of fuel, rather than taking your foot off the gas putting it back on," Ronan said.

And when you fill up your tank in this desert heat, it may be a good idea to wait until temperatures are cooler, since gas evaporates.
