U.S. Agents Not Embedding With Mexican Police

EL PASO, Texas —

The violence in Mexico has been ongoing for years, but now that it has caught the attention of the rest of the country, what if anything is being done by the U.S.?

A recent report indicated that U.S. agents would embed with Mexican authorities throughout the country, but now it looks like that may not be the case.

A report published by the Washington Post this week indicates U.S. officials were planning to embed American intelligence agents with Mexican police. Their mission was to go after drug cartel leaders and their hit squads, while working from a Mexican command center.

But, U.S. and Mexican officials said joint efforts between the two countries are only limited to sharing intelligence information and training.

U.S. Ambassador Carlos Pascual said "I want to absolutely clarify that the United States does not have operations in Mexico... what we do have are people working as advisers to share information, intelligence and experience between the two countries."

Aside from U.S. increased efforts and the billion-dollar Mérida Initiative, the Obama Administration plans to focus more on training and building stronger Mexican institutions.
