EL PASO, Texas —

The father of a teen allegedly involved in the assault of an off-duty police officer said his son didn't even know what was going on.

Affidavits state Alan Medrano's friend Juan Antonio Gonzalez brutally beat an off-duty police officer, Jonathan Molina, after Molina caught him keying his car.

"He didn't know exactly what the problem was," said Armando Medrano, Alan's father. "They had hit him (the police officer) and he didn't notice."

Molina, an off-duty police officer, was attacked Tuesday afternoon after he confronted three individuals who were vandalizing his car, police said. He suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Detectives from the Crimes Against Persons Unit determined that Molina confronted Gonzalez, 17, and two others after they allegedly damaged the officer's car, police said.

Police said Molina identified himself as an off-duty officer, and at that point, he was attacked by Gonzalez and taken to the ground, injuring his head.

The victim lost consciousness and was unable to protect himself while Gonzalez continued to attack him in the face and head, police said.

Medrano said his son was walking ahead of his other friends, with his earphones in his ears, when the altercation occurred.

"He didn't want to get himself into a bigger problem, so he went to one side," Medrano said. "That's when they followed him."

Police said Alan Medrano attempted to flee police while he was being detained. He is charged with evading arrest or detention.

Witnesses rushed to aid the officer and the three assailants fled the scene.

Police later located Gonzalez and arrested him. He is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant and was booked into the El Paso County Jail with bail set at $200,000.

Medrano's father maintains his son's innocence.

"It's going to be hard on our family if he's found guilty but I know God is with us at this time," he said.

The investigation is still ongoing, and police have not released booking photos at this time.
