UPDATE: David Marmolejo Turns Himself In To Police

David Marmolejo turned himself in to police Friday afternoon after being accused of killing his mother Gloria, 54.

KFOX talked to El Paso police late Thursday, who confirmed detectives were questioning someone in the strangling death of Gloria Marmolejo.

Then around 2 a.m. Friday, El Paso police dispatch put out a call to officers to be on the lookout for David who has several tattoos on his arms and neck and was last seen on foot near Don Haskins and Pellicano.

Investigators have not revealed any motive behind the crime. But according to El Paso police, Crimes Against Persons detectives developed information leading to a warrant for David Marmolejo.

The two lived together in a house in the 1800 block of Sonoma. That is where Marmolejo was last seen on July 25.

KFOX was first to cover Marmolejo's disappearance, spreading her family's urgent plea to help find her.

"We need peace," Marmolejo's brother Mark Huerta told KFOX in an interview on July 30. "And we need her because she is our peace."

David Marmolejo was present during the interview, but did not speak to KFOX.

His mother's body was found on July 31 in a desert area behind Santa Teresa Elementary school, which is nearly 40 miles away from their home. Marmolejo's body was identified through fingerprints, and the investigation switched from missing person to homicide.

Marmolejo's family, including David, gathered to speak with the median once again on Aug. 5.

"We don't know who could have that kind of hate," said Huerta. "Or who could have that kind of anger."

An autopsy report revealed Marmolejo was strangled to death.

David Marmolejo is currently in the custody of Crimes Against Persons Detectives and will be booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility. He is to be charged with one count of murder and held on a $1 million bond.

A search of David's criminal history showed he was arrested in February 2000 on an Unlawful Carrying Weapons charge. He pleaded guilty in 2001. But there is no violent history on his record.
