EL PASO, Texas —

El Paso Fire officials confirmed Sunday morning to KFOX 14 that a spark from a broken axle is what caused hay being carried by a tracker trailer to catch fire Saturday evening.

The fire started on I-10 west around the Sunland Park exit in West El Paso at around 6:30 p.m.

Fire crews responded to the fire with heavy smoke and big flames shooting from the trailer.

Nearly 20 firefighters fought the truck fire.

An El Paso Fire spokesperson said it took crews three hours to put out the fire.

The spokesperson also said in a press release that the underside of the truck was not fully enclosed, which is how the sparks were able to catch the hay on fire.

El Paso fire crews cleared the scene after 1 a.m. Sunday morning.
