TxDOT To Address Hawkins Exit Traffic

EL PASO, Texas —

On most weekends, and especially during the holiday season, the exits at Hawkins Boulevard become a parking lot.

"If you are actually at the mall, you can't even get out of there," said Saul Lopez from Northeast El Paso.

"It's pretty packed up and it's pretty backed up with a bunch of cars," said Mercedes Hackett from East El Paso.

Now TxDOT has a $7 million plan to relieve the traffic.

"We're planning on reversing the ramps between Airway to Viscount," said Antonio Uribe Jr. with TxDOT.

There are eight total entrance and exit ramps between Airway Boulevard and Viscount Boulevard on both sides of I-10. By making the exit ramps entrances and vice versa, drivers will spend more time on the gateway, and less time on the freeway backing up traffic.

"The ramps back up onto I-10, causing a complete stop on I-10. That's caused some accidents in the past and some near accidents that we want to avoid," said Uribe.

For example, the entrance ramp to I-10 right after Viscount Boulevard will now become an exit for Hawkins Boulevard, so if there is heavy traffic, it will take place on the gateway.

"At first it might be confusing for everybody, but if they actually thought about it through, it probably could work," said Lopez.

"I think it's better, and it will be quicker and faster so that everybody can get going where they really got to go," said Hackett.

TxDOT said the project is expected to start next summer with plans of completing it by the fall.
