Two Former Police Officers Face Off For Sheriff's Race

EL PASO, Texas —

The Democratic candidate for sheriff is former El Paso Police Chief Richard Wiles. His Republican challenger is ex-gang officer George Rodriguez Stoltz. They're facing off in one of the most watched local races of this election.

Wiles said if he's elected one of his priorities is to find a way to consolidate some police and sheriff's programs to save taxpayer money.

"For me to take my experience with the police department go to sheriff and work together to try to reduce the redundant services between police and sheriffs," said Wiles.

Wiles feels strongly that this election comes down to training, education and experience.

"I was chief of police for four years. I ran a large organization with lots of employees, a complicated organization with a huge budget. When you compare me against my opponent, I have those things he doesn't," said Wiles.

Stoltz said he also has the experience and leadership needed to run the sheriff's department.

"The last 18 months of my life I spent serving Iraq as an international police advisor, training and advising and mentoring the Iraqi hierarchy -- lieutenant colonel and colonels -- in democratic principals, human rights, woman rights and civil rights," said Stoltz.

Stoltz said while in Iraq he gained a lot of experience with detention facilities.

"For the last 18, months I've been every day working at detention facilities in Iraq using the United Nations principals of safe guarding and protecting the accused. My opponent doesn't have experiences in detentions," said Stoltz.
