Two Fires Keep Firefighters Busy

Investigators with the El Paso Fire Department said one of two fires on Wednesday morning appeared to be an accident, while the other fire was not.

The first fire happened just before 1:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Del Rio Apartments on the 6700 block of Alameda Avenue. Investigators said it looked like someone left a cigarette burning, and that is what started the fire.

Fire crews made quick work of the flames in one vacant apartment. However, the resulting smoke and commotion meant fire crews needed to evacuate many of the residents. Many of them suffered from physical and mental disabilities and worried about getting back into their homes to get their medication.

Fire officials allowed those residents back inside a few hours later with the exception of four people who received help from the Red Cross.

A few hours later, firefighters responded to a call of a fire at a house near the intersection of Grama Street and Montana Avenue.

Investigators said just before 5:20 a.m., someone used gasoline to start a fire inside the home. Neighbors reported hearing an explosion, then seeing smoke.

A woman who happened to be inside at the time needed to be evacuated. She did not suffer any injuries.

Firefighters managed to keep the damage to the woman's kitchen and laundry room area.

Fire officials said they were working with police to identify any potential suspects.
