July 30, 2006 —

Emergency crews responded to the intersection at Paisano and Gateway South after a two-car collision involving 12 people including children and an infant. Upon arrival, emergency crews say they realized two people had been ejected.

"The van was making a U-turn heading west to head back east. An Expedition was heading east bound. The Expedition got frontal impact with the van. The van got hit on the right front corner," said Sgt. Glenn Archer with the El Paso Police Department.

Police say it was about 5 o'clock when the incident happened. One parent and five children were riding in the Expedition. Two parents and four children were in the mini van.

"Seat belts probably stopped a large amount of injuries that would have been a lot worse if they hadn't been wearing seat belts," said Battalion Chief Ralph Johnson with the El Paso Fire Department.

But not everyone was wearing a seat belt. Police say one child from each vehicle was ejected. Their ages are 12 and 10 years old.

"Please seat belt your children regardless if their older and of large frame. As you can see it was the older kids who got ejected out of the vehicles," said Archer.
