Downtown traffic

By Veronica Macias

After downtown El Paso experienced a gridlock on Tuesday because of the job fair at the convention center, several people are left wondering if the city can manage the traffic that's going to come with the ballpark.

Some people said it took 25 minutes to get from the convention center to I-10, after more than 9,000 folks turned out to look for jobs. The city engineer, Alan Shubert, said that this event illustrated how important traffic management will be.

Shubert said he doesn't know how parking for the job fair was orchestrated but traffic should have been directed toward the heart of downtown,  including Franklin and San Antonio streets, where there is plenty of parking.

The city has hired a consultant to conduct a traffic study and will know in six to seven what the circulation of downtown traffic will look like.
