Troop Withdrawal Negotiations Under Way

The U.S. Senate has joined the House in passing a bill that funds the Iraq war but calls for the withdrawal of combat troops next year.

The 51-47 vote was mostly along party lines.

It provides $122 billion for the U.S. missions in Iraq and Afghanistan but orders the president to begin withdrawing troops within six months of passage.

President George W. Bush has promised to veto any legislation that has a timetable for troop withdrawal.
