Transmountain Set To Expand Lanes

Related

EL PASO, Texas —

As the northwest side of El Paso continues to grow, traffic on Transmountain Road has increased tremendously in the past several years. The Texas Department of Transportation has plans to make changes to the existing road by adding two more lanes the 3.6 mile stretch between Interstate 10 in the northwest side and the entrance to the Franklin Mountain State Park.

Currently, Loop 375 (Transmountain Road) is a two-lane highway, but with more businesses popping up and more homes being built near the highway traffic has increased. Once construction is finished, the highway will have a median with a cable barrier to avoid head-on collisions. Crews will also be extending the current arroyos that provide drainage for the road.

El Pasoans who use Transmountain Road to cut across town feel it's about time the improvements are made.

"I've experienced a lot of accidents on this road due to the two lanes. So, I hope that (adding more lanes) will reduce a lot of those accidents," said Jacob Villasenol, of northeast El Paso. He said a lot of people get impatient and try to pass other drivers.

The project is set to start fall 2009.

A public meeting at the Canutillo High School cafeteria will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The meeting should last until 8 p.m.

TxDOT also has plans to connect Transmountain Road to Doniphan Road. The new road will be called Spur 276 and will veer traffic left as it exist Transmountain Road. Engineers hope this will alleviate traffic congestion in the Canutillo area already brought on by the Outlet Mall.

A public hearing will be held Thursday of next week at the Canutillo High School cafeteria from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
