Transmountain Road to see new detour and project

By Kandolite Flores

EL PASO, Texas —

New closure will be in place this week along the west end of Transmountain Road, but this isn't the only roadwork drivers will have to buckle up for.

Resler Drive between Paseo Del Norte and Transmountain Road will be closed Thursday at 9 a.m. through October. As part of the Transmountain West Project, the Texas Department of Transportation will be working on the new intersection.

Bike and trail lanes will not be affected and businesses will be allowed through the detour but all other traffic will have to take alternate routes.

"It's is bad. It is bad not only through here but also down on the Loop 375. It's pretty bad, so it's kind of hard to get to work," said Emma Silva, who lives in east El Paso and drives across town to Eloina's Flower Shop, where she is a floral designer.

The shop has been located off Transmountain Road for over 20 years, and although the roadwork that is already under way makes it hard to get there, Silva said it has helped business.

"There's a lot of traffic that goes in and out through here and now that construction is a little bit slower, they drive slow through here so they are actually able to see us," said Silva.

The shop's owner said she's actually happy about another upcoming project, the Spur 276, which will connect South Desert Boulevard to Doniphan Drive.

TxDOT said they should secure funding by August and have plans to start work by January. The Spur 276 is expected to be complete by 2015.

"Well, that's rough for me because I have to come to work but other than that, it's great, that's great because El Paso is expanding," said Silva.
