Transit Board Approves A Plan To Fix Sun Metro

June27, 2006 —

Sun Metro's purpose is simple. To get passengers from one place to another. On Tuesday, Sun Metro pitched a plan to the Mass Transit Board on how to better serve those passengers.

"It needs a lot of work, it needs investment and it needs committment. That committment was made today," said Sun Metro General Manager Terry Lee Scott.

As reported, Scott, announced his resignation by saying this might help facilitate needed changes. Those changes were approved by the board.

One of those changes is reducing service.

"I depend on two to three different buses to go back where I stay at, if I miss one I have to take another one. It might take a lot longer," said Northeast El Paso resident Roy Burge.

Sun Metro officials say 18 routes will be adusted starting next week. That means fewer buses will be running, so bus riders may wait longer in between buses to get to where they need to go.

"I get to school maybe an hour before it starts, if I try to go at a later time, I'll miss class," said Far East El Paso residetn Jessica Jimenez.

Officials say one of the problems now has to do with a bad decision made more than a decade ago. Sun Metro bought a large fleet all at once instaed of staggering a fleet replacement.

"By buying a limited number of buses 35 as opposed to 79 it makes it more managable in those out years to make the decision to we buy a new one or refubish," said Sun Metro Assistant Director Elizabeth Van Lauwe.

Right now, what worries bus riders is the reduction of bus service.

"I'm gonna have to start begging people for rides to even get here to get here on time," said Jimenez.

Also on Monday, money was approved to refurbish 25 buses which will include heavy duty air conditioners. The transit board, which is also city council will looking into some funding options. Already some funding comes from federal grant money, which will be used to purchase 12 buses by next year.
