SPUR 601 PROJECT- COMPLETED! TX-DOT officials confirmed the project ran according to plan and the Spur 601 – Liberty Expressway project was officially completed January 28,2011.
How did the project get started?
Texas transportation officials and the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority (CRRMA) signed an agreement with J.D. Abrams to finance, design and build the El Paso Spur 601 Project which will connect US 54 to the Purple Heart Memorial Highway (Loop 375). The cost of the project is $368 million.The seven-mile project is considered crucial to a Pentagon plan to bring more than 50,000 soldiers and family members to Fort Bliss and El Paso.The new highway is expected to handle traffic from military and residential construction at Biggs Army Airfield, as well as the increasing Northeast El Paso traffic.
SPUR PHASES
The extension of Global Reach Dr. from existing George Perry Blvd. to Walter Jones and the new Ft. Bliss / Biggs gate (Phase A-1) was open August 2008.
Spur 601 from Global Reach to Loop 375 (Phase A2 - 2.5 miles), was open in May 2009. This included the construction of the Loop 375 interchange and main lanes from Global Reach to Loop 375, the construction of the Constitution interchange and Backage Road.
Spur 601 from Airport Rd. to Global Reach Dr. (Phase A3 - 2.5 miles), was opened April 15 from US 54 to Loop 375, both east and westbound lanes.
