Tigua Leaders In Austin Asking Lawmakers To Reopen Casino

EL PASO, Texas —

Ignacio Madrid from West El Paso said he comes to Speaking Rock every day. He said he remembers when the area was booming when the casino was allowed to operate. The state shut down the casinos in 2002.

"People used to win a lot of money and Tigua Indians would help out a lot of Tigua Indians and business around the area," said Madrid.

This Legislative session, Democratic Rep. Norma Chavez is sponsoring a bill that would provide a defense to prosecution for Texas tribal casinos run by the Tiguas and the Alabama-Coushatta tribe of Livingston. Tribal leaders testified they should be allowed to offer gambling because Texas voters approved a state lottery in 1991. Opponents argue gambling is a predatory business that relies on addiction for profit.

The Speaking Rock Casino employed 800 people while it was open for nine years beginning in 1993. The Associated Press reports that Chavez said, now, El Paso-area residents continue to gamble but do it in nearby New Mexico.
