Three teachers speak out against new leadership at local high school

EL PASO, Texas —

KFOX14 News found three of 22 teachers who've left a local high school in one year, and those teachers told a different story than the Gadsden Independent School District.

Proponents of Gadsden High School's principal, Lucia Servin, claim the group of teachers who want her removed are bitter because they've been disciplined.

Joan Kalkwarf left GHS after seven years of running a reading lab and vision program.

"I've never been (disciplined at the school)," Kalkwarf said. "I've had exemplary evaluations. I have a doctorate from Texas A&M in education. I'm a certified master reading teacher and I'm a reading specialist."

Kalkwarf said she worked through two different principals at GHS. She said her career and the high school were on the right track.

"With this new principal, that all stopped," Kalkwarf said, echoing what many parents, teachers and students have told KFOX.

Gadsden's Superintendent, Efren Yturralde, released a statement Saturday claiming, "The 22 departures from the high school are based on various personal reasons." Yturralde also said the departures were not the fault of Servin.

Kalkwarf told a different story.

"I get back at the end of July and I look at the master schedule and my lab's been closed and nobody even told me," Kalkwarf said.

She said the lab closing resulted in a $7,000 pay cut each year.

And another teacher, who did not want to be identified, handed KFOX crews a formal complaint that she said was delivered to the district. Part of it read, "I left (GHS) because of poor leadership Lucia Servin exhibited."

Todd Allored teaches athletics.

"I had been in the PE department for nine years," Allored said. "And I came back (from summer break) and I'm now switched over to social studies."

So he left, just like Kalkwarf.

"I had no problem with my job," Allored said. "I was set to go back."

"I'm very attached to so many of the students and the teachers at Gadsden," Kalkwarf said.

KFOX has had a big response from supporters of Servin ever since the first story aired Saturday.

One student, Jorge, emailed and said, "I feel Ms. Servin has done a phenomenal job on cleaning up the school."

Another GHS parent, who did not want to be identified approached the KFOX live van Wednesday night and said, "Servin is the best thing that's happened to our community."

Yturralde was not available for comment Wednesday or at any point in the past week. The district said that Lucia Servin is not allowed to speak with KFOX.

A formal complaint about Servin will be read to the school board Thursday.
