The Sun Bowl Fans Boost El Paso Economy

EL PASO, Texas —

Tickets are almost sold out for Monday's Sun Bowl game. Oregon will be taking on South Florida, but local businesses say no matter who comes out on top, they are the real winners.

Packed restaurants and hotels is bad news for football fans but great news for local businesses.

Bernie Olivas is on the Sun Bowl Association. He said, "Obviously, that is one of the reasons that we have a bowl game, to have a positive impact on the city."

The Sun Bowl association estimates between $12-15 million are brought to El Paso from football fans in just this one week.

Leo Duran is the president of El Paso Restaurant Association. He said, "The spending money that is left here by the visiting community goes well beyond spending in El Paso, and for a large part it stays in our community."

Fans have not only brought their money here, they have embraced the Sun City.

"The thing about Oregon is that it is beautiful, the thing about Texas is that it is beautiful in a different way. Because you've got palm trees that don't grow in Oregon, but you have that mountain range and stuff," said Karl Nielson.

Weather it's the food or the fanfare, El Paso's a good host.

"It is about El Paso. It is for El Paso, and it is El Paso. It helps the entire community, not just the Sun Bowl," Olivas said.

Numbers on the economic impact won't be available until early next year. The Sun Bowl Association estimates it will be at least $10 million.
