EL PASO, Texas —
A therapist director at the skilled nursing facility said it has patients excited.
"I’ve noticed that it's kind of gotten them even more excited about therapy because you're not just doing the same old exercises,” said rehabilitation director Staci Webb.
The same old exercises that one patient said don't work as well as this new treatment that they have just been introcduces to.
"I like all types of therapy, but this one is more important because it works more for my muscles in my arms,” said Aurora Rivera.
Rivera has only had a few sessions with the Wii but she said it's already helped her injuries heal faster.
"My muscles used to be... really tense but now they've eased up. I fell like it has really helped,” said Rivera.
Although it's not replacing your typical exercises, it is enhancing what's already in place, making it more enjoyable for patients. "They don't realize that they're exercising. They just think that they're playing a game,” said Webb.
Mr.Gallegos suffered from a stroke and the “Wii-habilitation” program has helped him with eye-hand coordination, problem-solving and being able to follow directions.
"It frustrates him as much as it excites him so I think he really enjoys it,” Webb said.
Although Nintendo doesn't market the Wii's potential use in physical therapy, the director at Mountain View told KFOX we can expect to see two other facilities adding the "Wii -habilitation" to it's therapy exercises by late this summer.
