The F.B.I. Is Looking To Hire Hundreds

The FBI says it needs to hire 900 agents before Oct. 1. While the Federal Bureau of Investigation has been more selective in previous years, it's different this time around.

"Last year we were real particular about certain degrees. This year the gates are pretty wide open," said Andrea Simmons, a special agent with the FBI.

Even though the door is wide open for applicants, there are basic requirements. First, you must be a U.S. citizen, 23 to 36 years old, have a college degree, and at least three years of work experience. The basic requirements are demanding because of the job description.

"It can be somewhat of a dangerous job; you're obviously dealing with a lot of bad guys. It's very demanding. There's a lot of long hours, but it's a great way to serve your country," said Simmons.

Applicants also have to be willing to expect the unexpected.

"Really, no day is the same. Even on days when I've come to work expecting to do paperwork or kind of office stuff, we'll get a call about a bank robbery or a kidnapping, so your whole day changes," said Special Agent Kyle Casey.

There are incentives for agents. Besides job security and benefits, starting salaries are in the high 50's.

If you don't think you could be a special agent, think again.

"We want to see women, men, people of different age range. We really want people to have a very diverse background, because that is what helps make us good investigators," said Simmons.
