The Debate Over School Uniforms Heats Up In Anthony, N.M.

EL PASO, Texas —

Dozens of parents packed the Gadsden Middle School cafeteria to debate whether or not school uniforms should be worn. Maria Vasquez, a mother of one middle school student, said, "It's the best choice for them. I'm afraid of gangs, and if they wear a uniform it's better."

Frank Ardiz, a father of two students. He disagreed saying, "I don't think uniforms are going to stop crime."

Administrators hope a mandatory uniform policy will curb gang activity.

School districts like Socorro who have already made the change say it's for the best.

"I've been in several school districts that have done this. After the initial shock is gone, in the long run, they will be happy," Pat O’Neill of the Socorro Independent School District told KFOX.

Thursday night’s meeting lasted for more than two hours, and the administration said they do not yet have an idea of what the uniforms would look like.
