Thanksgiving Eve A Dangerous Night For Drivers

University of Texas at Austin student Cesar De la Paz is home in El Paso Wednesday night for the holidays.

Del la Paz did not spend his Wednesday night with family.

“Tomorrow is family time, so today we are taking the time to be with our friends,” De la Paz said. “Party a little bit."

With the partying, however, comes the alcohol.

"Its thanksgiving, we're obviously going to drink,” De la Paz said.

While De La Paz does not plan on drinking and driving, many people do every year during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Thanksgiving is the deadliest holiday of the year. More than 500 Americans lost their lives on the roads last Thanksgiving weekend, and many of those deaths were DUI related.

This holiday local organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving have a message.

"With the holidays, there is celebration there is joyous times, which is great, we're just saying do this responsibly,” said Virginia Gonzalez, Executive Director of the local chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

On Thanksgiving eve in 2003, Alexis Olivares and Alexandra Gutierrez were struck and killed by a drunk driver on Mesa and Cincinatti Streets.

Bartenders and managers keep the night they were killed in mind.

"We make sure that we don't over serve people, and if they are over served we make sure they get a taxi or they have a designated driver," said Rick Carino, manager of Crawdaddy Bar.

"One of my friends is driving, he's not going to drink," said De la Paz.
