Texas Vs. The Nation All-Star Bowl Means Big Business

Employees at Fuddruckers were busy cooking over 120 burgers, As over 120 hungry football players walked off the bus, ready for dinner. It's just one of a number of events for those playing in the Texas vs. the Nation All-Star Bowl.

"It is an important economic development and tourist event. It is kind of like the Sun Bowl. You may not care about football, but the Sun Bowl is really important to our economy," said Joyce Wilson, El Paso city manager.

The hope is by bringing these players here, it will bring money to El Paso.

"These people will be staying at hotels, eating, shopping, and enjoying El Paso, and then going back and telling their friends and other colleagues about this great community," said Wilson.

Fuddruckers says having the bowl in El Paso is already having a benefit.

"Anything that comes to El Paso I think is beneficial to us, It really drives business and it drives business, and it helps the economy all the way through," said Armando Armendariz with Fuddruckers.

While Fuddruckers and El Paso are benefiting from people being in El Paso this week, what is probably the greatest benefit will be the national exposure.

"We are going to be able to get our Sun Bowl emblem and UTEP emblem on national television, and bringing in all of these pro scouts will be really good for our community, and hopefully get a good crowd," said Mike Price, who coaches the Texas team.

But to keep the bowl here in years to come, El Paso will have to fill up the Sun Bowl.

"We'd like to have at least 15-to-20 thousand people in the stands. And I think if we can deliver on the first event, that it'll solidify El Paso as the place for the Texas vs. the Nation College Bowl going forward," said Wilson.

Bowl officials expect 18 NFL general managers to be in attendance looking for potential players, along with 125-150 NFL scouts. Barry Switzer, former Dallas Cowboys head coach will be a special guest. The bowl expects over 100 of the players participating will sign NFL contracts.
