Texas Smokers Could Soon Pay More Per Pack

Texas smokers may have to pay more for a pack of cigarettes.

On Thursday, a $1 tax on a pack of cigarettes was approved by the Texas House in Austin.

The new tax was passed to offset school property tax cuts.

Lawmakers expect the dollar cigarette tax to generate more than $600 million a year.

If the Texas Senate agrees, the new cigarette tax will be added to the 41-cent levy that smokers already pay in state.
