During Special Session

By Kandolite Flores

AUSTIN, Texas —

Texas Governor Rick Perry filed a proclamation Monday, calling for a special session to discuss fiscal matters necessary to fund the 2012-13 budget.

Perry is pushing for approval of a new school finance law that failed in the regular session.

State leaders expressed their concerns over the failure to pass a decision on school budgets across Texas.

"I love you all. I am so angry with what you all are doing. I am so angry at what you are doing. Parents and Texas voters should be even more angry," said Sylvester Turner,Texas State Representative.

Senator Wendy Davis a democrat extended a debate on the proposed budget cuts to public school filling up the last hour of Monday's session.

This filibuster forcing Perry to call for a special session buying more time to pass the bill.

"I thought it was silly, I think that we've been debating and arguing about this for a long time," said Davis after the last regular session, Monday.

The bill would reduce the state's obligation to public schools by $4 billion over the next two years.

Locally some residents are concerned.

Richard Dominguez who lives in central El Paso has grandchildren in public school and told KFOX14, "It will have a big effect on the kids. The more teachers the smaller the classes the less teachers the bigger. You'll get some kids who don't pay attention."

Teachers, students and families have rallied across Texas against the proposed budget cuts.

"I don't think they should do it. They've got the lottery going and supposedly it's for schools. Where is that money going to?" said Dominguez.

The special session could last for up to thirty days. Giving lawmakers the chance to discuss this bill along with others on the agenda. The issues will be decided by Perry and are to include medicaid services and immigration.
