Tensions rise at Tornillo ISD board meeting

By Gina Benitez

EL PASO COUNTY, Texas —

Tornillo Independent School District's embattled superintendent Paul Vranish was on Thursday night's agenda, but the issue got tabled, which added to the meeting's hostility.

It was a packed house in the meeting room, and board members sworn-in said they have a lot of work to do with the school district. They began by addressing all of the allegations against the Vranish.

"We have a lot of questions about spending, about expenditures," said newly sworn-in board member Sally Upchurch. "We're going to ask these questions because we want people to be held accountable."

Vranish has been in hot water since the Texas Education Agency discovered $48,000 in questionable reimbursements and mismanaged money by the superintendent.

A new board of trustees was sworn in at the meeting and several items on the agenda were tabled, including what most of those in attendance were there for – the fate of the superintendent.

"I think a lot of it is that our school lawyer was dismissed; he left," Upchurch said. "So I don't feel comfortable going into executive session without our legal advice with us."

Tensions ran high after the meeting, and a young man claiming to the old board president's son didn't take the new board members lightly as he started to get rowdy in the crowd.

"Things are not the same like they used to be. I hope things don't continue to be," Upchurch said. "There's tension. I hope they settle down and we get to business and find out what's going on."

Vranish refused to speak to KFOX14 and said he had a lot of paperwork to go through.

A special board meeting will be held Monday.
