EL PASO, Texas —

With a winter storm that will bring snow and winter temperatures down to 9 degrees the El Paso Fire Department warned people to be careful when heating their homes.

By Tuesday highs will reach 40 degrees and a low of 16 degrees Tuesday night with a 30 percent chance for rain and snow.

"I don't like that it's going to be cold," said Imelda Franco.

On Wednesday highs will only reach 29 degrees and overnight lows will dip to 9 degrees with a 40 percent chance for snow.

"I'm a chicken when it comes to being cold," said Adam Mena.

Firefighters warned people not to use stoves as heating sources because there is a risk for carbon monoxide poisoning.

If using a space heater, fire leaders suggest keeping it at least three feet away from combustibles, curtains, walls or anything that can catch fire.

They said it’s safer to use a space heater on a hard, even surface instead of carpets or rugs. And if you are going outside, fire leaders said bundle up.

“If you're going outside, please, you know take enough clothing, enough warmth because the wind and the cold weather can sneak up and you can succumb to hypothermia."

With temperatures this cold a good check list is to make sure you have anti-freeze in your car, cover your pipes and bring in your pets and plants.

The Centers For Disease Control web site also stated that people should have nearly a full tank of gas to help avoid ice in the fuel lines.

"I filled up my car with gas and I bought groceries and if i don't have to go out the next few days, I'll be very happy," said Franco.
