Teen sentenced to 12 years in prison for role in attack outside O.P. nightclub

El PASO, TX —

A teen charged with beating a man outside a downtown El Paso night club has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to his role in the attack. This is according to our media partners at the El Paso Times.

Court records show that Ruben Arturo Valenzuela, 17, pleaded guilty last week in court.

Another man, Manny Portillo, 19, pleaded guilty earlier this month and is awaiting sentencing.

Valenzuela, Portillo and three other teens were charged in the violent beating of Lionel Martinez, who was then 22, outside of the Old Plantation nightclub on Ochoa Street on May 7, 2011.

Martinez’s relatives called the beating a hate crime because they felt he was attacked because they believe the attackers thought he was gay.

Martinez said he is not gay, and had been waiting outside of the club for his sister to pick him up.

Valenzuela was 16 at the time of the attack and was later certified to stand trial as an adult.

In January, Esteban Alfaro, 17, was convicted in a state district juvenile court on assault charges and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Two others, Ivan Gallardo, 18, and Roman Olvera, 20, are scheduled for trial this summer.
