Teen Remembered One Year After Drunken Driving Accident

EL PASO, Texas —

Friends and family gather to remember 19-year-old Valerie Talamantes in a candle light vigil late Sunday night.

The accident happened exactly one year ago at the intersection of Montana and Hawkins in east El Paso.

Valerie was stopped at a light when another car slammed into her killing her instantly.

One year later, flowers and friends mark the spot the 19-year-old died, sharing stories and shedding tears.

The Talamantes family told KFOX the purpose of the vigil was not only to remember a daughter taken too soon, but to raise awareness and prevent another family from suffering the same fate.

"Coming back each time it just feels like yesterday. As long as we keep her close to us, in our hearts and in our memories," said Rebecca Mummert, one of Talamantes’ friends.

The trauma from the accident still haunts the Talamantes family. The vigil was the first time Valerie's father had been to the intersection since the accident.

The family plans to hold another vigil next year.
