T or C residents worry anticipated tourism from Spaceport America will fall short

Truth or Consequences, N.M. —

Spaceport America is the world's first commercial port meant to send tourists into outer space and a major reason for the public support had to do with the expected tourism it would bring in for New Mexico. But some Truth or Consequences residents told KFOX they're skeptical the town will benefit at all.

"I haven't seen any changes of any kind," T or C resident William Andrews said.

Andrews has lived in T or C for 12 years and said he hasn't really seen new development since the announcement of the Spaceport America, and with the exception of the Holiday Inn Express off the highway, he's right.

Many companies are passing on developing in the state, leaving some like Williams to question whether the spaceport will truly bring in the big boom of tourism the state is hoping for.

The project came at a cost of $209 billion from taxpayer money.

"I can't see where it's going to help us a whole lot," Williams said. "We should've put the money towards a new hosptial or improvements in schools."

But life-long T or C resident Butch Bullock sees it differently. He said, for now, there's not much of a need for more hotels and isn't worried about it slowing down tourism.

"I think we have adequate hotels and restaurants here right now," Bullock said. "As things progress, maybe they should build more but not until these here are 75, 85 percent full all the time."

Some local officials blame the lack of new businesses on the legislature turning down laws that would exempt spacecraft suppliers from liability for passengers if the spacecraft crashed.
