Swat Team Searches For Fugitive, Finds Animal Farm Instead

By Jacob Rascon

EL PASO, Texas —

Police were looking for a man with outstanding felony warrants Thursday morning in south central El Paso, but they found dozens of animals instead.

Neighbors of the Rodriguez family that lives at 144 S. Awbrey St. said they woke up Thursday morning to explosions and walked out of their front doors to find several police units and a SWAT team hard at work.

They said police broke down the front gate of the home after shooting three concussion grenades into the front yard.

Police didn't find who they were looking for, but they did arrest 26-year-old Ruben Rodriguez at the home for outstanding traffic warrants.

To their surprise, police also found dozens of roosters and eight pit bulls roaming around.

Neighbors said the owner bred the dogs and used to run a cock fighting business with the roosters.

Animal control took the dogs and told KFOX-14 that the fugitive also broke the law with his animals.

"(The) person that was staying at the house was given about 12 citations for animal violation laws," Deputy Director of Animal Services Edwardo De Castro said. "The roosters are going to be taken care of by family members, and we're awaiting for family members to come and get the (dogs) here (at the shelter)."

Animal control said the fugitive didn't vaccinate his dogs, register them with the city, get them a microchip or get a breeding permit.

Tonight on KFOX-14 News At Nine, learn who neighbors said the fugitive is and why police are searching for him.
