El Paso County Sheriff's
MONTANA VISTA, Texas —
The family of Rafael Lopez, the man who killed himself during an overnight SWAT standoff, blames El Paso County Sheriff deputies for not letting them speak to him during the negotiations.
"They killed him, I told them a lot of times," said Cynthia Lopez, "They didn't give a chance to talk to him."
Cynthia Lopez and her father ran to KFOX14 after learning Rafael Lopez allegedly shot himself inside his home near the 1400 block of Marvin Lane deputies said.
"I told them a lot of times, I'll go in and bring him out!" said Lopez's father, "They killed him! They killed him!"
Lopez locked himself in a Montana Vista home during a standoff with authorities.
Lopez allegedly shot at deputies and a bail bondsman. They were trying to serve Lopez a warrant, around 4 p.m. Thursday, for allegedly violating his probation.
"We could have gotten him out," said Lopez's father, "Me and my son were very close. We were going to get him out. They didn't want to."
More shots rang out as Lopez allegedly shot at authorities.
"Officers retreated and called for crisis negotiation teams and our tactical units," said Sgt. James Belknap, of the El Paso Sheriff's Office, "The mother was on stand-by, by the crisis negotiation team to have her readily available, if the opportunity came to establish contact with her. That time did not come."
The Sheriff's Office said it has opened a criminal investigation, while the family searches for answers.
"They could have let my mom talk to him." said Cynthia. "They said they were going to let her, but I guess they don't keep their word!"
Cynthia tells KFOX14 the family plans to file a lawsuit against the Sheriff's Office.
