SOCORRO, Texas —
At 2:15 a.m. Monday, neighbors living near Place Road and Pablino Place called 911, saying they had heard a loud noise.
Socorro police officers found the car on its roof in a ditch. Police said the 38-year-old driver may have been drunk and speeding when he veered off the road and slammed into a tree.
The tree was on top of the car. Police called for the Jaws of Life when they saw the position of the vehicle and thought they were not going to be able to get the driver out.
“The tree caused him to flip his vehicle into the canal right there,” said Officer Thomas Spearman.
“The door was already open. He was moving around. We were able to grab his arms and pull him out,” said Spearman.
Officers don't know if the driver was wearing a seat belt. They said speed and alcohol are to blame for the rollover.
The man was taken to Thomason Hospital. His condition is unknown.
