Susan G. Komen Foundation: Planned Parenthood funding cuts won't affect El Paso

By David Natividad

EL PASO,Texas —

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation recently announced the ending of its partnership with all Planned Parenthood affiliates. The move caused controversy linked to the abortion debate.

Planned Parenthood said the move resulted from Komen bowing to pressure from anti-abortion activists.

Komen said the key reason is that Planned Parenthood is under investigation in Congress.

The cutoff of funding means hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant money is now lost for Planned Parenthood, which was mainly used for breast exams.

Stephanie Flora, the executive director of the Susan G. Komen affiliate in El Paso said the move will not cause any kind of effect in El Paso. She pointed out that the Planned Parenthood ceased providing health care services in El Paso in 2009.

“"Our focus will continue to be on our mission, which is to help the underserved and uninsured get access, and to be able to pay for breast cancer services and that hasn’t changed,” Flora said.

Flora said that the Susan G. Komen foundation will continue to give grants to all other organizations locally that they have funded in the past.
