Sunland Park Council Approves Land Purchase

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. —

The city of Sunland Park is buying a new plot of land, and while some are having a tough time in the rough economy, Mayor Martin Resendiz said it shouldn't prevent them from moving forward.

The three City Council members who voted Friday night in a special meeting voted unanimously to buy the land, which is a short distance from the Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.

“We're basically looking at purchasing land. It actually is a beautiful plot of land on Sunland Park Drive and Gibson Veck here in Sunland Park.

Resendiz said he understands that several communities are facing budget shortfalls and financial problems, but he and council members are looking at the long term benefits.

“Sure there's a financial crisis going on. Does that mean we stop progress to move the city along? No, no, not at all,” He said.

Resendiz said he used to attend school at what is now the City Hall, and he said that City Hall could use an upgrade.

“Everything really is in the planning stage. There does exist, the possibility, of course contingent on funding, of yes building a more attractive City Hall,” he said.

Resendiz said racetrack gave the city nearly $12 million to pursue a border crossing, and the city is working with the racetrack on this project.

“I think that its good because the mayor doesn't have a good office and the government service needs a good place to bring the office to the people of Sunland Park,” said Alsilmo Alvarez, resident of Sunland Park

He said even though some communities are struggling, it brings positivity to the city.

“If they have the money it's good because if they build a building, the building means jobs for the people,” he said.

“We want to move the city forward we wouldn't do anything we couldn't afford to do,” said Resendiz.

The price on the project is a little more than $2.5 million for the land. Future buildings are, for now, just a wish for the council members who voted.

At this point, it seems most people are on board for the purchase.
