Sun Metro Lift program to change; Passengers concerned

EL PASO, Texas —

Getting a "Lift" with Sun Metro will change soon, and those who use the program are worried it may not be for the best.

"The reason that they decided to do this is because The Lift program is one of the areas where we need improvements. Sun Metro needs to improve those services," said Laura Cruz-Acosta, spokeswoman for Sun Metro.

Nathan Coleman, who has been using Sun Metro's Lift program for years, has some concerns about the changes.

"There's always room for improvement, but from when I first started using it about 15 years ago I've seen changes in terms of having the structure it has now. So I really like it," he said.

But Sun Metro said there are still some necessary improvements missing. That's why City Council voted to award a contract to MV Transportation in May. The company focuses on transportation for those with disabilities and the elderly.

"We're looking at general topics: on time performance, safety and friendliness, courteousness, professionalism. We want to be able to schedule appropriately with the drivers and the passengers. And we want to make sure the passengers that want the lift are indeed in need of the service," said Laura Cruz-Acosta, spokeswoman for Sun Metro.

Coleman isn't just worried about changes for passengers but the drivers he's trusted for so long.

"They are compassionate and they do care for the community. The new company that's coming in, they are going to hire new drivers to take over. It's kind of scary because they're new, and I've had the same drivers for, like I said, 15 years, and now that's going to be a big change," said Coleman.

But Cruz said drivers will have options to pick from before November when MV Transportation will officially take over.

"They can switch over and work for the fixed route if they would like too. If they don't want to continue with the city they have a couple options if they're close to retirement they can retire or they can actually work for MV transportation. They're being offered comparative options with MV," she said.
