EL PASO, Texas —

Students at Burges High School organized a student protest in support of their classmate Jesus Villegas, who was arrested on Oct. 19 for wearing a dual-ring to school that was deemed a weapon.

"Free Jesus!" chanted students.

Once the lunch bell rang, students walked out of the school's main doors holding signs and wearing red T-shirts.

The protest was also attended by the senior's mother, who said her son has been very depressed and discouraged after he was transferred to Raymond Telles, an alternative school, for 45 days.

"They were too drastic. They over-exaggerated with him because he doesn't have a bad record. They've at most called me once about him. He is a good kid with lots of friends.Even his teachers like him,and look -- I have letters written to him from his teachers and friends," said Lilia Gutierrez to KFOX-14 News.

School administrators lined the front of the school to make sure it was a peaceful demonstration.

Senior Maria Lare, who helped organize the student protest, said that Villegas is a good student and is part of a group called Mustangs makde a difference.

"We just want to show him that we support him and that we know he did not mean any harm," said Lara.

Villegas has said that he was trying to accessorize his outfit and did not know the ring was considered a weapon under the Texas Penal Code.
