Students have high hopes for construction of special-needs park

By Erika Castillo

EL PASO, Texas —

There is no playground in El Paso that is specifically designed for full access to children with physical challenges.

Fort Bliss does have a park that is fully accessible to all, but it is not owned by the city.

A group of students who recently graduated from Coronado High School are trying to change that fact before each of them leaves to their respective colleges to pursue pre-medical degrees.

Two years ago, the high-achieving group of academics determined that they needed to research and identify a need in the El Paso community as part of a baccalaureate program. They completed the research about the parks and followed through to the design of the special-needs park.

They located a company that could build it, and The Miracle League offered a parcel of land it leases from the city to build the park. The city even granted the students $5,000 to start the fundraising.

Despite their efforts to pitch their ideas for financial support from the community, the students did not meet their goal upon graduation from high school. Nevertheless, the students say they do not want to give up with so much of the work done. All that is needed is to raise the money.

The students tell KFOX 14 they are leaving with hopes The Miracle League can, in essence, make a miracle happen by building the park.

They also said each of the students plan to return to El Paso to practice medicine where they hope to one day see the park become a reality.
