Several Burges High School students are claiming a friend was unfairly arrested for wearing a dual ring to school on Oct.19.

Jesus Luis Villegas, 17, was arrested for wearing a two-inch ring, friends claimed is from Rue 21. He was released the same day on a $5,000 bond.

Renee De Santos, spokesperson for the El Paso Independent School District, said the ring is prohibited under Texas Penal Code.

"EPISD policearrested and charged a 17-year-old Burges High School student with Places Weapons Prohibited and Prohibited Weapon after he brought knuckles to school," said De Santos in an email.

"The case was presented to a magistrate judge for review and enough evidence was found for a Probable Cause Affidavit/Warrant and the student was booked into the county jail."

Villegas tells KFOX-14 he never thought his ring would be considered a weapon and instead was making an effort to accessorize his wardrobe.

He said he is in the process of appealing his case.

Friends of Villegas told KFOX-14 Newsthat he meant no harm.

"He's a very happy person. He is always willing to help others. His is generous, kind, and caring. He cares about others. He is just a very good person," said his good friend Isaac Villado.

"I think they are exaggerating in this situation. He was using it more as a style piece not as a weapon and I know Jesus for like many years already, and I know for sure that he would't have brought a weapon to school."

Villegas said he will be spending approximately 45 days at EPISD's alternative school.
